Timber summer house

4. ledna 2012 | Katariina Rautiala, Pentti Raiski

Our task was to design a holiday home in Vuolenkoski, Finland. Our whole family took off for a site visit one sunny summer day. The site proved to be both challenging and breathtakingly beautiful.

The steep topography made us sweat while seeking possible locations for the building. The strong character of the rocky site created a clear starting point for the architectural approach. We wanted the building to abstractly reflect the overall shapes of the cliff and blend into it.

The architectural shape is sculptural and the amount of visual materials minimalistic. The building has got a fully wooden building envelope, consisting of Finnish timber and engineered wood. Wood is a sustainable and renewable material, today more grown in Finnish forests than is used.
